Four thousand miles from Dublin and a little South-East of Wheeling
I stumbled on a pot-o-gold this rainbow was revealing.
This little fellow dressed in green with a brogue as thick as stew
Said, Give me back me gold and Ill give one wish to you.
There was this dark-haired sweetly some, remotely kissin kin
Was my hearts only weakness and my major, covet sin.
But now the years slipped by and the romance is wearin thin.
Shes meaner than a tail bit dog, and as bitter as gin.
I could-a been handsome, I would-a been rich, I should-a been smart.
Should-a tended my wallet instead of mendin my heart.
I could-a got me a mansion, had a limo, my own chauffeur.
But I passed all that up and I wished for her.
Now the French aint that funny and the Jews aint always wise.
But the Irish seem to hold the upper hand when it comes to lies.
All I asked for was happy. All I got was misery
And fourteen children only two of whom look like me.
Mama said it wont heal if you continue to pick it
And be careful what you wish for, boy, you just might get it.
But she was soft and warm and pretty, a boys best chum.
Somewhere down the road she stopped bein all that much fun.
I could-a been cool, I would-a been wise, I should-a been funny.
Had fame, good fortune, true love, had rolls of money.
Could-a saved the world, run in much better circles, life a beautiful blur.
Jet planes, slick cars, fast women, but I wanted her.
Now its an ill wind that blows no good so I been told
Cause the same rain the ruins your parade makes the corn to grow.
If you think I wasted my , one wish makin her my wife
Think if Id had two, I might have wished for a longer life.
I could-a been good. I would-a been bad, I should-a been strong.
Got respect from men, had the love of woman, written better songs.
I should-a gotten all the good things that Ive missed in my life
Instead-a singing for free at another open mike.
I could-a been wild, I would-a been cute, I should-a been free.
Just imagine all the wonderful things that I could be (fade)
